Two Ways to Be Seen: In the Clarkston Office, or by Telehealth Anywhere in Michigan

This matters more than a list of towns, so it goes first. In-person appointments happen at the Clarkston office, which suits people within a reasonable drive. Telehealth appointments are available to clients located anywhere in Michigan, because clinicians are licensed by the state rather than by the county.

So the honest answer to do you serve my area is usually yes, and the more useful question is which format fits your week. People with school-age children, rotating shifts, a long commute or a winter that makes M-15 unpleasant often do better with a mix of both.

Mental Health Counseling Available Across Every Area We Serve

The same services are available whether you drive fifteen minutes or connect from Lapeer County. Format is chosen by fit, not by postcode.

  • Individual therapy — anxiety and panic, depression, trauma and PTSD, grief, anger, ADHD, stress and burnout, adjusting to illness
  • Couples and family therapy — communication breakdown, separation and divorce, parenting conflict, blended and estranged families
  • Group therapy — clinician-led groups for people working toward similar goals, which helps most where isolation is part of the problem
  • Psychiatry services — evaluation and medication management alongside therapy, coordinated with your other providers

Children, adolescents, adults and older adults are all seen here. See the full list of services.

Substance Use Concerns: What Outpatient Counseling Can Address, and When to Ask for More

Substance use rarely shows up on its own. Far more often it sits alongside anxiety, depression, trauma, chronic pain, grief or a marriage under strain, and it is one of the more common things people raise in an outpatient counseling room — sometimes in the first session, more often in the fifth.

Outpatient therapy is the least restrictive level of behavioral health care, and for a great many people it is the right one. It is well suited to examining the role a substance plays, working the underlying condition rather than only the symptom, rebuilding family communication after a difficult period, and supporting someone who has completed a more intensive program and needs somewhere to keep doing the work.

Some situations need a different level of care first.

Withdrawal management, residential treatment, intensive outpatient programming, and medication for opioid or alcohol use disorder sit outside what a counseling office provides. Withdrawal from alcohol and from benzodiazepines can be medically dangerous and should not be stopped abruptly without medical supervision. Where a more intensive level of care is indicated, the right thing for an outpatient practice to do is say so plainly and help you get there — then be available for the step back down afterward.

Coordination with a physician, prescriber, program or school happens only with your written permission, and you can revoke that release at any time.

Families, Schools and Young People Across Northern Oakland County

A large share of what comes through the door in this part of the county involves young people — anxiety that has started to affect attendance, behavioral changes at home, a family navigating a separation, a teenager whose social world has moved somewhere their parents cannot see.

Families come to us from the Clarkston, Waterford, Brandon, Oxford, Lake Orion, Holly, Goodrich and Rochester school communities among others. Where it helps and where you authorize it, we coordinate with a school counselor or physician so that everyone is working from the same picture rather than three partial ones.

Insurance, Cost and Getting Started

Cost is one of the most common reasons people put off making the call. Triad partners with many insurance carriers and works with clients on individualized financial plans, and private pay is available for anyone who prefers to keep insurance out of it.

Coverage varies enormously between plans, including two plans from the same carrier, so it is worth calling the member services number on your card before the first visit and asking four things: whether outpatient mental health is covered and this provider is in network, what your copay or coinsurance per session is, whether your deductible has been met this plan year, and whether a referral or prior authorization is required.

Questions People Ask From Outside Clarkston

I live an hour away. Is that too far?

Not necessarily. Telehealth is available to clients located anywhere in Michigan, and many people at that distance do an initial in-person session and continue remotely.

Is telehealth as effective as sitting in the room?

For most common outpatient concerns the research is reassuring, and the appointment you actually attend beats the one you cancel because of the drive. Some work — young children, certain trauma processing, some family sessions — benefits from being in person, and your clinician will say so.

Do I need a diagnosis or a referral before I call?

No diagnosis, no. Some insurance plans do require a referral for coverage, which is worth checking with your plan first.

Will my employer or anyone in my town find out?

What you say in session stays in the room. You receive a written notice of privacy practices at intake explaining exactly how records are handled. Narrow legal exceptions apply to every licensed clinician in Michigan: suspected abuse or neglect of a child or vulnerable adult, a serious and imminent threat of harm, and a valid court order.
